The surname Grimaldi derives from the Frankish name Grimald or from the Lombard Grimoald (“chief who wears a helmet”).

The first to bring the noble family to Sicily was Enrico Grimaldi, son of Charles, Lord of Menton. Enrico, in 1397 obtains the barony and the castle of Bozzetta, the chatelaine and the royal castle of Castrogiovanni; he was the first to settle in that city, becoming the parent of Simone, Pietro and Pino, the first baron of Risicallà and Carrangiara, as well as a lineage of the princes of Santa Caterina, in which an Enrico Grimaldi baron of Risicallà and Geracello flourished.
